Be an Informed Voter

It’s easy to become an informed voter.  Whether you are voting on an issue or for a candidate for Class President, remember to examine the issues, weigh the pros and cons, and most importantly, get out there and vote!  Try the exercise below to see if you know how to be an informed voter!

The Issue

Should K-12 education be conduction on a year-round schedule with two week breaks every three months?

 The Arguments

Pros

*        Students can avoid becoming burned out because they will have more frequent breaks

*        Students won’t forget everything they learned over the summer

*        Teachers would have more instruction time

Cons

*        The new schedule would eliminate “summer jobs” and might make it more difficult for students to get part-time jobs

*        It could negatively impact businesses such as King’s Dominion and Busch Gardens that depend on students to spend money in their establishments

*        Students might not have enough time to adjust to the move from elementary to middle school or from middle school to high school if they only have two weeks in between

There are many more pros and cons to this issue.  See if you can add to the list before you cast your vote.
