CALLS INCREASE AS VOTER REGISTRATION DEADLINE APPROACHES

~New Voter Registrations and Changes of Address Must Be Submitted By 10/5/09~

RICHMOND, VA – As the voter registration deadline draws closer, Virginians have increased the number of inquiries to the State Board of Elections (SBE) and local registrar’s offices. Questions range from registration deadlines to candidates on the ballot.

The deadline to register to vote or update one’s registration for the November 3rd election is this Monday, October 5. Applications for first-time voters may be submitted to the local voter registrar by mail or in person.

Virginia residents are encouraged to check their voter status, polling place location, and a sample of their local ballot by checking the State Board of Elections website (www.sbe.virginia.gov). Virginians may also call SBE at 1-800-552-9745 or their local registrar’s office for assistance.

Over 400,000 Virginians have received a blue post card entitled “Address Confirmation Notice” from SBE.  This notice was sent to those voters because they have a different address than what appears on their current voter registration record. To avoid delays in voting, those citizens are asked to indicate their correct address and return this address confirmation notice by October 5th. The mailing helps to ensure the accuracy of voter lists in the Commonwealth.

Virginia residents who have already registered to vote, but only need to update their name or address may use a Virginia Voter Registration Application.  Once completed with the new name and address information, the application may be mailed or faxed to their local registrar’s office or submitted in person.

Voter registration applications must be postmarked no later than October 5, 2009 for the November election.  If the application is faxed or dropped off in person, it must be in the voter registration office by the close of business on Monday, October 5.

For more information on all things involving elections in the Commonwealth, please visit the Virginia State Board of Elections website at www.sbe.virginia.gov.
