RICHMOND, VA – Some voter identification information being
circulated by various groups contains incomplete and incorrect information.
Therefore, we recommend voters who have questions contact their local voter
registrar, the State Board of Elections or the official State Board of
Elections website.
When voters go to the polls on Election Day they will be
asked to present identification. Acceptable forms of ID include:
·
Virginia voter registration card
·
Valid Virginia driver's license
·
Military ID
·
Any Federal, state or local
government-issued ID
·
Employer issued photo ID card
·
Social Security card
Federal law requires a qualified
voter voting in their first federal election in Virginia, who registered by
mail and did not send a copy of a ID with their registration application, to
present any one of the following acceptable forms of ID:
A current and valid photo ID (for
example a driver’s license) or a current utility
bill, bank statement, paycheck or government check that shows name and
address or another current
government document that shows name and address (for example a voter card).
If a voter is voting for the first time in a federal
election and does not show ID, the voter may be required to use a provisional
ballot. This paper ballot will be counted once it is confirmed the voter is a
registered voter in Virginia and did not cast another ballot.
Any other voter who forgets to bring acceptable ID to the
polls may still vote but will be requested to sign, under oath, an
Affirmation of Identity form affirming their identity.
A voter who requires assistance to vote for reason of
physical disability or an inability to read or write may be assisted upon
request in completing any required form.
For more information on acceptable forms of ID go the
State Board of Elections website at
