RECORD NUMBER OF REGISTERED VOTERS READY TO VOTE IN NOVEMBER

~ Election Officials Run Checks on New Applicants to Ensure Integrity of Vote ~

RICHMOND, VA – This week Virginia recorded the largest number of registered voters in its history.

Since January, Virginia has experienced a net gain of 436,000 new voters for November’s election.  This is the largest surge in voter registration that Virginia has ever experienced.  The State Board of Elections and registrar’s offices throughout the state received an onslaught of new voter registrations prior to the October 6 deadline. Virginia’s total number of registered voters is now 5,021,993.

Nearly 40% of the newly registered voters across the Commonwealth will be under the age of 25 on Election Day 2008. Trends show that, regardless of age, females represent the majority of new registered voters.

Voters in Virginia are assigned to precincts based on their residential address and the state database is monitored frequently to protect against voter fraud and duplicate registrations.
